02 / Recurring communications
Ongoing CRCP communications
A developed hypothetical communications strategy for reef education, science translation, stewardship, stakeholder engagement and recurring program information.
Independent hypothetical portfolio project. Not affiliated with, commissioned by, or endorsed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Strategy development: Substantively complete for this portfolio. Individual articles and other communications assets are being produced separately.
Intended outcomes
Six complementary outcome areas
- Knowledge and understanding
- Reef awareness and appreciation
- Stewardship behavior
- Conservation and citizen-science participation
- Stakeholder engagement
- Visibility of conservation science and program activities
These are strategic aims, not quantified performance commitments. Coverage may overlap and varies by audience and purpose; specific responses and measures will be defined in future briefs.
Audience strategy
Broad public education is complemented by more targeted communications for reef users and stakeholders. Three non-ranked categories organize potential audiences; their roles as recipients, intermediaries, collaborators, or information sources depend on the initiative. The examples below show possible applications, not selected deliverables or verified audience responses.
| Example audience | Proposed communication | Intended response | Why this audience? |
|---|---|---|---|
| General public and coastal communities | |||
| Coastal residents | Accessible explainer on the ecological and economic value of Southeast Florida’s reefs | Better understand and appreciate the reefs’ importance | Residents have a connection to the coastal environment without necessarily using reefs directly. |
| Students and educators | Reef ecology educational resource | Develop understanding of reef ecosystems; enable educators to share that knowledge | Educational settings provide opportunities for science communication. |
| Recreational and professional reef users | |||
| Recreational boaters | Seasonal guidance on avoiding physical reef damage | Understand and practice relevant reef-protection behaviors | Boating activities can directly affect reef habitats. |
| Recreational divers | Explanation of coral disease research and monitoring | Understand a reef threat and the conservation work addressing it | Divers can directly observe reef conditions. |
| Professional, institutional and community stakeholders | |||
| Dive operators | Reef stewardship information suitable for communicating to customers | Understand and potentially share relevant guidance | Operators can be both direct audiences and intermediaries. |
| Marine researchers | Interview or profile explaining a verified conservation project | Contribute scientific expertise to accurate public communications | Researchers can serve as information sources, collaborators, and audiences. |
Planning and execution
Consistent themes, flexible planning
Recurring content will draw on four educational themes: reef ecology and value, threats to reef health, science and conservation work, including the people involved, and stewardship and participation. Themes can overlap within individual pieces. Editorial planning will also leave room for timely scientific developments, reef conditions, events, seasonal recreation, stakeholder information, and participation opportunities without imposing ongoing publishing quotas. A separate June 2027 case study illustrates a single proposed month.

Distribution approach
Three complementary channels would share an editorial foundation, with content adapted to each channel and useful links connecting audiences to deeper information or participation opportunities.
Website content hub
An organized, searchable home for reef education, science, conservation developments, and relevant external resources, with newsletter signup and social links.
Monthly email newsletter
A proposed standalone publication combining original explanations and CRCP updates with curated reef research, outside resources, and opportunities. Readers can follow links to deeper website content and valuable external sources.
Social media
Support education, engagement, and discovery by adapting shared editorial material to appropriate platforms and directing interested audiences toward useful resources and subscriptions.
Occasional targeted emails could address time-sensitive developments or specific audience needs. Partner and community sharing, along with relevant earned-media coverage, could extend reach. This is a proposed channel model, not a claim of DEP platform access, mailing-list permissions, staffing, or existing newsletter operations.
